Bruno Fernandes, the captain of Manchester United, has opened up about the essential quality that he believes has propelled him to become a top-tier footballer. Following a remarkable 2025/26 season where he played a pivotal role in helping United secure a third-place finish in the Premier League, Fernandes has reflected on the attributes that have made him a standout performer.

During the season, Fernandes achieved an impressive total of 21 assists, breaking the previous Premier League record that had been jointly held by legends Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. Additionally, he scored nine goals in the league, showcasing his dual threat as both a playmaker and a scorer. His exceptional contributions were recognized when he received the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award, adding to his accolades that include the Premier League Player of the Season and Manchester United’s Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year honors.

In a recent appearance on the 'Beast Mode On Podcast,' Fernandes highlighted his ability to read the game as a significant factor in his success. He explained, "I was lucky enough in my career, especially when I came to the Premier League, to have players around me who understood that I would see the play develop before it happened. They would make their runs a bit earlier because they knew I was going to spot the opportunity." This synergy with teammates has been crucial in his development, particularly during his time at Sporting Lisbon, where he played alongside players like Raphinha, who shared a similar understanding of the game.

Fernandes emphasized the importance of visualizing the game, stating, "The biggest strength in my career has always been the way I think and the way I do things a little bit quicker. I’m not the fastest or the strongest player, so I need to anticipate situations and make things happen before others realize what I’m doing." This mental acuity has been a cornerstone of his rise to prominence in the sport.

In addition to his mental preparation, Fernandes remains committed to improving his physical capabilities, often pushing himself in training. He recounted a competitive moment with teammate Benjamin Sesko, where he challenged himself to a sprint. "I always approach training as if it were a game. Last season, I had a 50-yard race with Benjamin Sesko. I started two steps ahead, and while he caught up to me, I was proud to have reached my top speed of 35.5 km/h against someone as quick and strong as him," he shared.

Facing criticism is part of the territory for a player of Fernandes' stature, especially at a club like Manchester United, where expectations are sky-high. He has faced scrutiny from former players and media alike, including a notable disagreement with Roy Keane last season. However, he has learned to navigate this pressure, stating, "I’ve always told myself to believe in myself. Throughout your career, there will be moments when people doubt your abilities. That’s a constant, no matter how much you achieve or how many awards you receive."

As Manchester United prepares for their next match against Everton on Sunday, Fernandes continues to embody the resilience and determination that have characterized his career thus far. His journey serves as a reminder that both mental and physical attributes are essential for success in professional football.
