In a significant shift within the organization, Cadillac has announced the appointment of Marcin Budkowski as their new team principal, replacing founding member Graeme Lowdon. This change comes as the American team grapples with a challenging debut season in Formula 1, marked by a series of technical difficulties.
Graeme Lowdon, who is 61 years old, played a pivotal role in establishing Cadillac's presence in Formula 1, having dedicated three years to building the team from the ground up prior to their entry into the sport this year. Cadillac's CEO, Dan Towriss, stated that the decision to part ways with Lowdon was made to align with the team's future vision, rather than being a direct response to the ongoing reliability issues that have plagued the team, particularly concerning overheating brakes.
Towriss emphasized that the transition was discussed previously, but the timing accelerated unexpectedly. "There's a very narrow window of opportunity when you look at what we're building and an opportunity to build something new and innovative," he explained. He clarified that the decision was not solely based on recent performance issues but rather a strategic move to ensure the team is positioned for future success.
Lowdon was informed of the decision on Wednesday morning. Towriss praised Budkowski's extensive experience in Formula 1, highlighting his technical expertise and strategic leadership as crucial assets that will help Cadillac develop a winning mindset and the necessary tools for long-term success.
Budkowski, 49, has a rich history in the sport, having previously served as the team principal at Alpine from 2017 to 2022. His background also includes significant roles at Renault, McLaren, Ferrari, and the FIA, where he managed the technical department. At Cadillac, he will reunite with several former colleagues, including chief technical officer Nick Chester, who also has a history with Renault.
In a statement, Budkowski expressed enthusiasm about the new role, describing it as a phase filled with potential. He emphasized the importance of maximizing car development within the constraints of the cost cap and fostering a culture of excellence within the team. Budkowski aims to align the team’s personnel, tools, and information flow to enhance decision-making and improve performance consistently during races.
Cadillac entered the Formula 1 arena with the understanding that achieving competitiveness would take time. However, as of now, the team has yet to score any points in the first 11 races of the season, despite fielding an experienced driver lineup featuring Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas, both of whom have previously secured race victories. The team faces logistical challenges, operating from multiple locations, including an industrial park near Silverstone in the UK and General Motors' technical center in Michigan, with plans for a new headquarters in Fishers, Indiana, while maintaining a presence in the UK.
