Caitlin Clark Blasts Fever Fans for Booing Coach Stephanie White

Caitlin Clark is clapping back at Fever fans who booed Indiana head coach Stephanie White.

The WNBA star, 24, shared her perspective about the unusual crowd response on Tuesday, Aug. 11 which came after White defended DiJonai Carrington’s hard foul on Sophie Cunningham days before.

“It’s tough,” Clark said. “Like, that’s my head coach. I hated that our fans booed her before the game. That made me a little sick, to be honest. ... That’s our head coach, and we’re going to ride for her and we’re always going to have her back.”

Clark continued, “I just love her, and I feel for her because I know it can be a lot of times, and she does a great job a lot of times blocking [the outside noise] out. But there’s other moments where it can get under your skin, and that’s just being human, and that’s just life.”

During the game against the Chicago Sky on Saturday, Aug. 8, Carrington received a flagrant two foul and was ejected from the game after she committed a hard foul on Cunningham.

In the play, Cunningham was driving to the basket when Carrington made contact with her head and jaw.

From the locker room after, Carrington, 28, posted a message on Threads, seemingly referring to the situation. 

“WHITE PRIVILEGE,” Carrington wrote and tagged the Fever.

After the game, White defended Carrington, who she coached when both were with the Connecticut Sun.

“One of the things about [Carrington] is that she’s gonna play her butt off, man,” White said. “She’s gonna compete. Nobody’s gonna go walking in for a layup. And so, I don’t oppose the hard foul.”

White also vigorously defended her stance in an emotional statement before the game on Wednesday night.

“The hate, the fearmongering, the divisiveness, the stuff that’s trying to hijack our league will not win,” she said.

She continued, “We are united. We are connected. We will not be divided,” White said Tuesday. “Every day, these women put their ass on the line. Every day, when they go low, we go high. Love will win, grace will win, humility will win, and kindness will win. I stand by them. I will always stand by them.

She concluded, “Everybody else can go to hell.”
