Can Steelers rely on rookie Robert Spears-Jennings at safety?

Injuries across the secondary have thrust Pittsburgh Steelers seventh-round draft pick Robert Spears-Jennings directly into first-team defensive reps during training camp. The Oklahoma product has turned heads with his athleticism and structured preparation habits.

However, his trial by fire reveals a classic rookie reality; while his ceiling is high, he is not yet ready to solve Pittsburgh's primary weakness at free safety.

Spears-Jennings boasts elite physical tools, standing nearly 6-foot-2 and running a lightning-fast 4.32 40-yard dash. Beyond his physical traits, his disciplined mental approach stands out.

On Christopher Carter’s “Locked on Steelers” podcast, guest Mike DeFabo of The Athletic shared the young safety’s unique method of self-reflection. Spears-Jennings writes down three targeted areas of focus every single day to guide his development, working to slow down the game.

"The fact that he writes down three things shows that he's taking a very detailed approach to his development," noted DeFabo. "A team with 10 draft picks that picks a player in the seventh round, that could be a throwaway guy. He has the high-end elite measurable traits. He ran the fastest 40 of any safety at the combine. He's got a nearly 6’2” frame."

That raw profile makes him an ideal candidate to establish an immediate role on special teams, echoing how he carved out his collegiate path. However, taking on starting safety duties in the NFL presents a much steeper learning curve.

"Especially recently, I think when he's been in first-team situations, he's also looked like a rookie," DeFabo added. "I would not feel super confident in him being your starting free safety week one if Jaquan Brisker is not healthy."

Carter agreed, pointing out that while Spears-Jennings has shown flashes, including a big tackle behind the line of scrimmage in preseason play, he has also "been toasted a lot" in coverage.

Spears-Jennings offers long-term promise, but Pittsburgh cannot rely on a seventh-round rookie to anchor deep coverage on day one.
