Cardinals vs. Cowboys: 6 position battles to watch

The Arizona Cardinals play the Dallas Cowboys Saturday night at State Farm Stadium in their third preseason game. While quarterback Jacoby Brissett and other starters are not expected to play, there will be players and position battles to watch.

There are battles for depth on the roster.

What are the position battles to watch against the Cowboys?

Wide receiver: Jalen Brooks, Reggie Virgil, Simi Fehoko

These three receivers are all doing great. Brooks has led the team in receiving in the preseason. Fehoko has played well on special teams and has caught a touchdown pass in four consecutive preseason games, dating back to last year.

Virgil has made plays, too. The three are battling for one or two spots on the roster.

Running back: Bam Knight, Corey Kiner

Presuming that Tyler Allgeier, Jeremiyah Love and James Conner will be the top three backs, the question is who will be No. 4. Knight probably has the edge, but Kiner has been equally impressive in the preseason. Both should get extended action.

Tight end: Teagan Quitoriano vs. Rivaldo Fairweather

With Tip Reiman not being able to be ready by Week 1, there is an opening on the roster to be TE3 to start the season. Quitoriano seems to be in the lead, but Fairweather has been solid so far.

Backup guard: Hayden Conner, Matt Pryor, Oli Udoh

With Chase Bisontis out for the season, the main backup guard job is now wide open. Conner appears to be ahead of the other two, and he can play center, too. But Pryor and Udoh have been full-season starters at right guard before, and they both can also play tackle.

Inside linebacker: Owen Pappoe, Karson Sharar

Three positions are locked in with Mack Wilson, Cody Simon and Jack Gibbens. It is essentially down to Sharar and Pappoe for the last spot at the position. Pappoe has played over 300 special teams snaps the last two seasons. Sharar is a rookie and was a special teams stud in college. Sharar has made plays in the preseason.

Cornerback: Denzel Burke, Max Melton

While Will Johnson likely won't play, it wouldn't be surprising to see Burke and Melton start. They are battling for the starting job. Burke appears to be ahead, but that isn't for certain, and the preseason isn't over.
