Williams Racing has also confirmed Carlos Sainz to stay put for the 2027 F1 season, showing faith on the team’s long-term project.
Amid speculation around Sainz with several teams on the grid, the Spaniard has extended his stay at Williams for the 2027 F1 season and beyond in a multi-year deal, showing faith on the long-term project as stated by the team in the press release. He completes the line-up after confirmation of Alexander Albon on Tuesday.
After his stint with Ferrari, where he was replaced by Lewis Hamilton, Sainz had the option to either join Williams or to-be Audi team. He put his faith on the Grove-based team eventually. The decision almost didn’t work at the onset of 2025 F1 season, when he struggled to put together results.
Podiums in first season with WilliamsBut as the season progressed, Sainz started to find his groove and rhythm and ended up with two podiums in Azerbaijan and Qatar – something that teammate Albon is yet to do with Williams. But F1 2026 hasn’t been kind to him or the team on the whole under new regulations.
After missing the Barcelona shakedown, Williams made it in Bahrain. But by Australia, it became certain that they have work to do due to fundamental issues. Even though he managed to score six points in the first half of F1 2026, the team is still trying to solve issues at hand.
This led to speculation that Sainz may opt out and join a rival team for 2027 and beyond, which linked Sergio Perez with Williams. But Cadillac clarified that the Mexican is to stay with the American F1 team, which is all but confirmed after Sainz’s confirmation of contract extension.
Sainz, Vowles on contract extension“I’m thrilled to announce my continued journey with the Atlassian Williams F1 Team family,” said Sainz, upon the announcement. “I truly believe in the people that form this team, both at the factory and at the racetracks, and the investments and hard work that are happening in the background.
“We have what it takes to turn this around together. I’m as committed as I was on day one to helping get Williams back to where it belongs, and I look forward to creating more memories with the team.”
At the same time, team principal James Vowles, added: “From the moment he joined, Carlos’ talent behind the steering wheel and dedication back at the factory have been extremely valuable for this project – working day in, day out with his engineers to find every millisecond.
“He is a leader of this team, and I’m thrilled that he can see what’s possible as we continue to rebuild it. It’s not just his racecraft and speed that stand out, but the work he does behind the scenes in the pursuit of high performance.
“Carlos shares the belief and ambition we have at Atlassian Williams F1 Team and is pushing every day to deliver it. Along with Alex, I truly believe we have one of the strongest line-ups on the grid, and a team capable of fighting for every ounce of performance together.”
