Former San Diego Chargers cornerback Quentin Jammer wants to see the Dallas Cowboys win it all this season, and his reasoning has nothing to do with the Cowboys themselves. Jammer made his feelings clear about wanting Brian Schottenheimer to bring a Super Bowl to Dallas, framing it as payback against the franchise that once fired Brian’s father.
“I pray to God that Brian Schottenheimer wins a Super Bowl for Dallas. I hate the f****** Cowboys, but I loved Marty, and I love Brian and the family! What a f*** you to the Chargers that would be! I’d LOVE to see it. No disrespect to our fans, but Marty meant that much 2 me!” Jammer wrote.
Jammer’s connection to the Schottenheimer family goes back to the 11-seasons he spent with the Chargers, where Marty Schottenheimer coached him for five of those years, from 2002 to 2006. Under Marty, San Diego built into a genuine contender, capped by a franchise-best 14-2 season in 2006 that earned the team the AFC’s No. 1 playoff seed.
That season ended in heartbreak instead of celebration. San Diego lost its divisional round playoff game to the New England Patriots, and less than a month later, Chargers president Dean Spanos fired Marty Schottenheimer entirely, citing what he called a “dysfunctional situation” between the coach and general manager A.J. Smith.
“This decision was so hard because Marty has been both a friend and valued coach of our team,” Spanos said in a statement.
That didn’t sit well with Jammer, who has said that Marty “believed in me more than any person in my life. Ever!”
Marty coached 21 NFL seasons, going 200-126-1 with the Browns, Chiefs, Washington and Chargers, and finished as the seventh-winningest coach in NFL history. Marty passed away in 2021 at the age of 77 after battling Alzheimer’s disease.
Brian Schottenheimer, Marty’s son, is now in his second year as the Cowboys’ head coach. Before getting the Dallas job, he spent years coaching around the NFL, including time on his father’s Chargers staff. Jammer’s post is a reminder that Marty’s exit from San Diego still means a lot to some of the players who were there.
The circumstances around Marty’s firing still stand out because of how strong the 2006 Chargers were. San Diego went 14-2, scored an NFL-best 492 points, and had 61 sacks, while LaDainian Tomlinson won MVP after one of the best seasons of his career.
Seeing Brian potentially win a championship with Dallas would mean something different to Jammer, especially given how Marty’s tenure with the Chargers ended.
