The Chargers are a few weeks away from the start of what should be an exciting and thrilling 2026 season.
Los Angeles has set itself up for a great season and should be in the thick of things in the AFC West and the conference. However, before all that takes place, the Chargers will cut down their roster from 90 players to 53.
That is all set to take place on August 30, and there will be some tough decisions to make from now until then. Usually, undrafted young players or fringe NFL guys get cut more often than not; however, veteran offensive lineman Trevor Penning is a prime candidate for the chopping block.
Carter Bahns of CBS Sports listed 20 veterans who could be cut, and Penning was among them.
"Los Angeles' maligned offensive line is now mostly healthy and rebuilt, so there is less need for Penning, who would be nothing more than a second-teamer if he stuck on the roster. Considering all it cost to get him was a sixth-round pick, the Chargers can easily cut bait."
Penning is a former first-round pick in 2022 by the Saints and spent the 2025 season with the Chargers. The 27-year-old re-signed with the Bolts on a one-year deal in March 2026.
It's been tough for Penning in Los Angeles due to a variety of reasons. For starters, he has struggled with pass protection, frequent penalties, and adjusting to multiple position shifts on an injury-depleted offensive line.
The Chargers' offensive line has plenty of questions entering the season, especially after losing center Tyler Biadasz. The uncertainty doesn't stop there, as the interior offensive line remains unsettled.
Even so, there's a chance Penning will look for a new team by next week.
