Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel reveals where things stand ahead of 53-man roster cuts.
On Monday, McDaniel spoke to reporters on the upcoming roster decision and said things are still wide-open in that regard.
"It's a difficult one just based upon the overall depth of the entire team," McDaniel said. "You're discussing nine or 10 linemen versus four tight ends versus four running backs [or] six receivers.
"It's hot and heavy right now in terms of those last positions, and that's what you want," McDaniel continued. "You kind of go into camp with the underlying hope that there's going to be tough decisions to make because that means if they're easy, your team is probably not talented enough.
The Chargers have until Sunday, August 30, to cut the roster down to 53 men.
"We're going to have some tough decisions. Fortunately, we have another practice and four quarters to evaluate before that time comes," McDaniel added. "It will be a healthy competition for sure to get one of those active spots."
The offensive line is certainly one of the biggest question marks in term sof how things will shake up there. There is still an ongoing battle in regards to the starting left guard spot, featuring three players: Kayode Awosika, Trey Pipkins III and Branson Taylor.
Awosika is the front-runner as Week 3 of the preseason approaches. According to ESPN's Kris Rhim, he predicted the Chargers will hold nine linemen, with Trevor Penning being the odd man out.
As McDaniel mentioned, the Chargers still have plenty of time before making any decisions, with several practices and a preseason matchup against the Rams still to come.
The Chargers have one of the deepest rosters in the NFL as the 2026 season approaches.
