Chargers' Cole Strange has honest assessment after rough preseason outing

Chargers offensive lineman Cole Strange was not happy with his performance in Thursday’s blowout loss to the San Francisco 49ers. 

Strange spoke to the media on Monday and said he wished he could have played better. 

“Not happy with how I played. I’d like to play better,” Strange said. 

Strange said he was out of position, playing right guard. He also added that he feels like that will be a simple fix. 

In the contest, Strange logged nine snaps, lining up next to right tackle Joe Alt. Mike McDaniel said that Strange’s limited action was meant to test fundamentals and technique ahead of the regular season. Strange was not at his best, as he ended up on the ground on multiple reps, allowed quick pressure and struggled with positioning on a defensive line stunt. 

Strange is primarily a left guard, though he has played right guard in his career. The majority of his snaps in the NFL have come at left guard, logging over 1,500 snaps, compared to 808 snaps at right guard. 

However, with the Chargers, he is set to start and play on the right side. 

With Strange on the right side, he's excluded from the ongoing left-guard starting spot that includes Trey Pipkins III, Kayode Awosika, Trevor Penning, and Branson Taylor. As things stand, Awosika is said to be the front-runner. 

As for Strange, he is set to enter his first season in Los Angeles. The Chargers signed Strange to a two-year, $13 million contract. The deal reunited him with McDaniel, whom he previously played for as a member of the Dolphins.
