In a thrilling display of resilience, the Charlevoix football team achieved its second consecutive comeback victory, defeating Boyne City 28-12 on Friday night. This win marks a strong start to the season for Charlevoix, which now holds a 2-0 record.

Head coach Don Jess expressed mixed feelings about the tension that comes with these second-half comebacks. "It’s not good for my health," he quipped, highlighting the stress of watching his team struggle early on before rallying to victory. Nonetheless, Jess acknowledged that the team significantly improved its performance after halftime, both offensively and defensively.

Charlevoix’s journey to victory was not without its challenges. After trailing 12-7 at halftime, the Rayders demonstrated their ability to make crucial plays when it mattered most. In the opening week, they had already showcased their comeback capabilities by overcoming a 16-point deficit against East Jordan. The team’s ability to perform under pressure has become a hallmark of their early season.

During the game against Boyne City, Charlevoix's offense found its rhythm in the second half. Quarterback Collin Jess connected with Carter Greenacre for two touchdowns, completing 7 of 13 passes for 109 yards. Running back Conor Vondra was a standout performer, rushing for 80 yards on just six carries and adding two receptions for 35 yards. The Rayders also benefited from contributions from Landen Whisler and Kalen Titus, who each found the end zone on the ground.

Defensively, Charlevoix was relentless, recording 11 tackles for a loss, with Peter Yanchulis leading the charge with six tackles, including two sacks. This defensive prowess proved vital in shifting the momentum of the game, particularly when Collin Jess intercepted a pass in the second half, further energizing the team.

As the Rayders celebrate their hard-fought victory, they are set to face a significant challenge next week against Kingsley, marking their first away game of the season. This matchup will test their mettle as they aim to maintain their winning streak.

On the other hand, Boyne City, now 0-2, will have a week off to regroup after their tough start. Originally scheduled to play Cheboygan in Week 3, they will instead prepare for a matchup against Kalkaska in Week 4. Despite the loss, Boyne City remains a competitive program, and their rivalry with Charlevoix adds an extra layer of intensity to future contests.

As the season progresses, Charlevoix's ability to perform in high-pressure situations will be crucial. With their current momentum, the Rayders are poised to make a significant impact in their upcoming games.
