Charlotte Hornets Make Deal for Veteran Guard From Cleveland Cavaliers

The Charlotte Hornets are trading Tre Mann to the Cleveland Cavaliers for veteran guard Dennis Schroder and cash.

The Hornets have been active with moves this offseason, and Schroder could now be a solid backup guard for the team and a potential trade chip at the deadline. The 33-year-old guard has two years remaining on a three-year $44.5 million deal.

In the 2025-26 season, Schroder averaged 10.8 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game, shooting 40.5 percent from the field and 32.9 percent from three.

Charlotte moves on from Mann in this deal, who has one year guaranteed left on his contract for $8 million with a team option for $8 million for the 2027-28 season. Mann is coming off a down season, averaging 5.5 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game, shooting 36 percent from the field and 32.3 percent from behind the arc.

With the moves the Hornets have made this offseason, acquiring another point guard makes a ton of sense. Charlotte moved All-Star LaMelo Ball to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Naz Reid and draft capital, paving the way for Coby White to be the starter at point guard.

However, behind White, Charlotte only had the 18th overall pick, Christian Anderson Jr., as a backup. 

While Anderson is coming off a productive season at Texas Tech, averaging 18.5 points, 3.6 rebounds, 7.4 assists, and 1.5 steals per game, it makes sense to add a veteran into the mix and allow the 20-year-old time to develop.

Schroder should fill that role perfectly for the Hornets, giving their roster another rotational piece to make a push into the Play-In Tournament once again. 

While Charlotte moved on from Ball and Miles Bridges this offseason, they still have a talented young core led by Rookie of the Year runner-up Kon Knueppel and forward Brandon Miller.

Under head coach Charles Lee, the Hornets' young group should be a competitive team in the 2026-27 season, and they have a ton of draft capital for the future, making them a team to watch in the Eastern Conference in the coming years.
