The Chicago Sky have officially signed guard Kate Martin to a developmental contract for the remainder of the 2026 season. This move aims to bolster the team's backcourt as they continue to evaluate their roster options during a challenging season.
The announcement of Martin's signing came on September 2. Prior to joining the Sky, she spent a significant portion of the season with the Los Angeles Sparks under a developmental contract. During her time with the Sparks, Martin's contract was elevated to a standard deal in July, allowing her to participate in 17 games.
Kate Martin was initially selected as the 18th overall pick in the second round of the 2024 WNBA Draft by the Las Vegas Aces. In her rookie season, she made an impact by appearing in 32 games. However, after developing a rapport with her teammates, she was ultimately left unprotected by the Aces ahead of the Golden State Valkyries' expansion draft.
In a twist of fate, Martin was chosen as the sixth overall pick by the Valkyries in the 2025 WNBA Expansion Draft. During the franchise's inaugural season, she averaged 6.2 points and 2.7 rebounds while logging 16.4 minutes per game. According to WNBA policy, players on developmental contracts can participate in up to 12 regular-season games before needing to transition to a standard contract.
