In a thrilling matchup on Friday night, Choctawhatchee High School's football team secured its first victory of the season, overcoming a slow start to defeat Pace High School 21-14. After beginning the season with two losses, the Big Green demonstrated resilience and determination, showcasing the confidence built from previous successful seasons, including a Final Four appearance in 2025 and four consecutive regional finals.
The game took place at Pace, where the local team was ranked sixth in the 5A category. Choctaw's defense played a crucial role, effectively countering Pace's formidable rushing attack. Running back Carter Marracco was a standout performer for the Big Green, scoring two touchdowns that initially gave his team a 7-0 lead and later a 13-7 advantage. However, a missed extra point would prove to be a pivotal moment in the game.
With just 2:42 remaining in the game, Choctaw found itself trailing 14-13 after Pace's Makael Williams broke free for a 60-yard touchdown run. The Big Green quickly regrouped, as quarterback Isaiah Collins connected with Noah Calderon for a significant 33-yard gain, setting the stage for a dramatic finish. Unfortunately, Collins was injured during the play, forcing former starting quarterback Baker Giles to step in.
In a bold move, Choctaw opted not to play it safe with a field goal attempt. Instead, Giles launched a 42-yard touchdown pass to Oregon State commit Amir Reese, who made a spectacular catch at the goal line, giving Choctaw a 19-14 lead with only 1:44 left on the clock. Following a successful two-point conversion by Marracco, the Big Green extended their lead to 21-14.
Choctaw head coach Frank Beasley praised his team's resilience, emphasizing the importance of in-game experience for the newer players. "Our kids are resilient. We understand it's a long season, and you have to prepare yourself," Beasley stated. He reflected on the historical competitiveness of games against Pace, noting that previous encounters often came down to the wire.
Looking ahead, Choctaw will face District 1-4A rival Escambia, who currently holds a record of 1-1, on September 11.
Meanwhile, in another notable game, Mosley High School continued its dominance over Niceville, winning 28-9. The Dolphins, led by quarterback JP Holsombake, who threw for two touchdowns, improved their record to 3-0. Running back Sam Chisolm contributed significantly with two rushing touchdowns, solidifying Mosley's position as a top contender in the Panhandle.
Niceville, now 1-2, struggled to find offensive rhythm, with their only touchdown coming from a 37-yard pass from Deagan McCoy to Malachi White. Coach Adron Robinson expressed frustration over missed opportunities, particularly in the red zone, where the team failed to capitalize on three trips, resulting in just three points.
As the season progresses, both Choctaw and Niceville will look to build on their performances, with Choctaw aiming to maintain its momentum and Niceville seeking to rebound against District 1-5A rival Navarre, who is still searching for its first win of the season.
