The Cincinnati Reds have made a significant roster move as they prepare for a crucial three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers, the current leaders of the National League Central. Outfielder Carlos Jorge, the team's No. 16 prospect, has been called up from the minor leagues, adding youthful energy to the roster as the season heads into its final stretch.
In a corresponding move, infielder Ivan Johnson has been optioned back to Triple-A Louisville. This marks the third time Johnson has been sent down this season, and his time with the Reds has been limited, with just five plate appearances since his return to the major league roster on August 23.
Carlos Jorge, who is approaching his 23rd birthday, is expected to take over center field duties for the Reds. Manager Terry Francona expressed enthusiasm about Jorge's promotion, highlighting his hard work and determination. "Kind of a kid who, nothing was given to him, he just kind of played his a** off," Francona remarked, emphasizing the player’s dedication and performance in the minors.
As September unfolds, the Reds are focusing on evaluating their younger talent, including Jorge, Edwin Arroyo, Héctor Rodríguez, and Juan Brito. This month is crucial for assessing how these players can contribute to the team’s future, particularly as they face some of the best teams in baseball, including the Brewers.
Francona noted the dual objective of wanting to win games while also preparing for the next season. "You certainly want to win every game you can; that’s the objective. You also try to set yourself up for next year when you’re going into spring training," he said, highlighting the balance between immediate success and long-term planning.
Jorge had previously impressed during spring training, where he made a few appearances with the MLB club. He described those moments as significant opportunities for him to showcase his energy and skills. The speedy outfielder has had an impressive season in the minors, hitting over .300 and stealing 33 bases, showcasing his potential to impact games with his speed and defensive abilities.
"I’m a speedy guy. I’m gonna play defense. I’m gonna make plays. I’m gonna put the ball in play and be on base for the guys. That’s my job," Jorge stated, underscoring his understanding of his role within the team. He also shared his surprise at being called up this year, reflecting on his journey through the minor leagues, where he played 110 games with the High-A Dayton Dragons last season before starting this year at Double-A Chattanooga.
"If you have a dream, go for it. Last year, I wasn’t thinking that I was gonna be here in the big leagues (in 2026). Don’t stop dreaming, play hard and do your best. At the end of the day, God is going to give you what you’ve worked for," Jorge added, illustrating his determination and optimism as he embarks on this new chapter in his career.
In addition to Jorge's promotion, the Reds are set to welcome back Graham Ashcraft to their bullpen. Ashcraft, who has been on the 60-day injured list since May due to a right UCL sprain, is expected to be activated on Sunday, September 6. In his 26 appearances this season, Ashcraft has recorded a 3.33 ERA and one save, and his return will bolster the Reds' pitching staff as they navigate the final weeks of the season.
