BATON ROUGE, LA - In a highly anticipated season opener, freshman quarterback Tait Reynolds made his debut for the No. 23 Clemson Tigers against the No. 13 LSU Tigers on September 5. Although Reynolds did not win the starting quarterback position, he was called upon to take the field late in the first half with Clemson facing a significant deficit, trailing 31-3.
Reynolds entered the game with just over a minute remaining in the second quarter, but his first appearance did not yield the desired results as the Tigers went three-and-out on their possession. The starting quarterback, Christopher Vizzina, had struggled prior to Reynolds' entry, completing only 6 of 11 passes for 51 yards and throwing an interception that was returned for a touchdown by LSU.
Throughout the offseason, Reynolds competed with Vizzina for the starting role, but Vizzina ultimately secured the position. Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney praised Vizzina's consistency and reliability as key factors in his selection. However, Swinney indicated that Reynolds would likely see playing time against LSU, a prediction he confirmed in an interview with ABC as he left the field.
Reynolds hails from Queen Creek, Arizona, where he was recognized as one of the top high school recruits in his class. During his sophomore year at Queen Creek High School, he threw for 1,808 yards and 11 touchdowns while also rushing for 631 yards and 17 touchdowns. His junior year saw even greater success, as he amassed 2,238 passing yards and 22 touchdowns, along with 1,426 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns, earning him first-team all-state honors and the Arizona Player of the Year award from the Arizona Cardinals. Unfortunately, a hamstring injury sidelined him for his entire senior season.
Despite the setback, Reynolds committed to Clemson in July 2024, and he is also set to join the Tigers' baseball team, having been named a 2025 Under Armour All-American in that sport. His dual-sport commitment showcases his athletic versatility and potential.
In the spring game prior to the season, Reynolds showcased his skills by completing 7 of 10 passes for 74 yards and adding a rushing touchdown. Swinney noted his progress during spring practices, emphasizing his elite arm talent and physicality while acknowledging that there are areas for improvement.
Both Swinney and offensive coordinator Chad Morris have expressed confidence in Reynolds' abilities. Swinney remarked that there was a time he believed Reynolds could win the starting job, commending him for his competitive spirit. Morris echoed these sentiments, highlighting Reynolds' unique talent and preparedness for future opportunities. He believes that as Reynolds gains experience, his value to the team will only increase.
As the season unfolds, Reynolds' performance and development will be closely monitored by fans and analysts alike, especially as he navigates the challenges of playing at the collegiate level for a storied program like Clemson.
