As extreme heat waves sweep across the region, local schools are taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of their athletes during practice sessions. This week, several teams, including the Xenia High School Buccaneers and the Trotwood-Madison Rams, faced delays in their training schedules due to soaring temperatures.

Maurice Harden, the head coach for the Xenia Buccaneers, emphasized the importance of adapting practice plans to prioritize athlete safety. "We do a good job as a coaching staff of trying to shift and punt and make adjustments so that our kids are safe and we’re also getting the preparation that’s required to have success," Harden stated. The extreme heat forced the Buccaneers to push back their practice times, ensuring that players could train in safer conditions.

Similarly, the Trotwood-Madison Rams were also affected by the heat wave, with their practice not starting until 7 p.m. on Wednesday, a significant delay from their usual schedule. Tiana Dixon-Gordon, a certified athletic trainer for the Rams, noted that adherence to OSHA guidelines is crucial during such weather conditions. "Based off the OSHA guidelines, there are different parameters in which we follow. So right now they’re in the area where you can wear shoulder pads and helmets," she explained.

Hydration is a key component of their strategy to combat the heat. Dixon-Gordon highlighted the increased availability of water and ice at the stadium, stating, "We have more ice and more water located in different parts of the stadium. So we always keep water on the court, as well as an ice chest." This proactive approach ensures that athletes remain hydrated and can perform safely during practice.

With high temperatures expected to persist through the week, both coaches and trainers are focused on implementing heat safety measures. Harden reiterated the importance of keeping safety at the forefront of their plans. "We wanted to make sure that’s at the forefront of everything, and we can work within the confines of what we get so that we can have our athletes prepared for Friday night," he said, referring to the upcoming games.

As schools across the country face similar challenges during the summer months, the emphasis on athlete safety remains a critical concern. Coaches and trainers are not only adapting practice schedules but also enhancing hydration and safety protocols to protect young athletes from the dangers of extreme heat. By prioritizing these measures, they aim to ensure that players can participate safely and effectively in their sports.
