Indianapolis Colts rookie defensive end George Gumbs Jr. didn't need long to make his presence felt in the NFL.
Gumbs recorded a sack in Thursday’s 13-13 preseason tie against the New England Patriots, giving the fifth-round pick a further boost after a strong stretch of training camp.
Speaking with reporters Sunday, Gumbs identified one particular challenge that has stood out while adjusting to NFL pass protection.
“Beating the chippers,” Gumbs said, referring to running backs and tight ends helping offensive tackles with chip blocks, via Colts reporter Jake Arthur.

— Jake Arthur (@JakeArthurNFL) August 17, 2026The physical transition itself has been less dramatic for Gumbs after playing in the SEC at Florida.
“Size and speed, pretty much the same thing,” Gumbs said when comparing SEC football to the NFL.
The Colts selected Gumbs with the No. 156 overall pick in April’s NFL draft, and Indianapolis also listed him among its standouts from the preseason opener after he joined fellow rookie defensive end Caden Curry in recording a sack.
Gumbs acknowledged there is still plenty to learn. Asked about the advice that has helped him since arriving in Indianapolis, he pointed toward consistency in his preparation.
“Be detail oriented … and stay in the playbook,” Gumbs said.
If the fifth-round rookie keeps his mental game and fundamentals parallel with a domineering physical side, he could earn himself a regular-season role.
