Washington Commanders rookie linebacker Sonny Styles made his much-awaited NFL debut in Friday’s preseason opener against the Miami Dolphins. The No. 7 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft started the game and wore the green dot, essentially acting as the quarterback of the defense.
While the Commanders won the game, 20-7, and held the Dolphins scoreless on their final 11 possessions, including forcing six punts, a turnover on downs and three interceptions, Styles was not pleased.
Why?
Most of Washington’s starters did not play. However, the Commanders, wanting to give Styles some game reps in the middle of the defense with the green dot, played the first series. The result? Miami went 14 plays for 93 yards and a touchdown. Sure, it was the Dolphins’ first-team offense against mostly Washington’s backups, but it clearly left a sour taste in Styles’ mouth, as it was the only series in which he played.
“Me and [LB] Leo [Chenal] were a little frustrated,” Styles said with a smile. “One drive, one touchdown, like 15 plays, so, not ideal, but go again next week.”
