Commanders' unofficial depth chart reveals questions at wide receiver

The Washington Commanders hosted the Miami Dolphins in their first preseason game on Friday night. Ahead of that matchup, the unofficial depth charts for each NFL team were released. These depth charts are unofficial for a reason: every team still has to trim its roster down to 53 men in a few short weeks, and how these players perform through preseason games and practices will ultimately dictate where they land.

Still, every team has something to garner from the unofficial depth charts, and CBS Sports NFL writer Jordan Dajani named one takeaway for each team. For the Commanders, Dajani has questions about the placement of rookie wide receiver Antonio Williams.

Antonio Williams buried?There's a lot of excitement for rookie wide receiver Antonio Williams, and while first-year players are usually listed as reserves on initial depth charts, it was interesting to see Williams listed as a third-stringer behind players like Luke McCaffrey, Jaylin Lane and Treylon Burks. So "technically," there are at least six players ahead of Williams on the Washington Commanders' depth chart. No one should overreact to the first depth chart of the preseason, but it's worth bringing up.

Williams left Clemson with the fourth-most career receptions (208) in program history, and caught 15 touchdowns over the last two seasons -- which ranked most in the ACC. The preseason will be important for him, but I'm optimistic Williams will play a role for Jayden Daniels in Year 1.

The way everyone has been talking about Williams in training camp suggests he will have a role for Jayden Daniels this season. Outside of Terry McLaurin and Stefon Diggs, the Commanders’ wide receiver room is relatively young. Burks is entering his fifth season in the league, McCaffrey is in his third, and Lane is in his second.

The most likely scenario is that we’ll see a rotation of every single wide receiver in that room until roster cuts are final. Williams is going to make the final roster, and it won’t be surprising to see him on the field in some capacity this fall, so take the depth chart with a grain of salt.
