Betnijah Laney-Hamilton hasn’t been with the Washington Mystics long, but she’s already making her presence felt on her new teammates.
After winning a championship in New York, Betnijah Laney-Hamilton saw her role shrink with the Liberty this season. Seeking more playing time, she was waived in August after trade talks stalled, allowing the Mystics to quickly snatch up the veteran off waivers to bring valuable playoff experience to Washington.
It’s Laney-Hamilton’s championship pedigree and tough 3-and-D skill set that makes her a great fit.
Entering the year rebuilding with a young roster, the Mystics have surprised the league by chasing a playoff spot, and her veteran poise brings the exact leadership this group needs.

Speaking just 48 hours after she joined the Mystics, McMahon revealed that she’s already taken charge.
“I would say, honestly, she came in as if, this is her squad. She’s adjusting really well. She’s a vet, so the IQ’s already there. I would say, honestly, she is just instilling even more confidence in me. She’s gotten on me multiple times to shoot the ball, when I’m open, and just certain things like that. She’s a great addition. We definitely love having her, and it’s only been a couple days”
With a potential playoff run upon us, her experience will prove vital if the Mystics are to make anything of it.
