This assurance comes from Naoki Alex Miyaji, the CEO of the Japan Cricket Association, who addressed concerns regarding the availability of five-star hotels for players.
With the Games set to take place in Nagoya and the Aichi region starting September 19, some officials from top Asian cricket teams, including Sri Lanka, have expressed worries about the facilities and lodging arrangements. Cricket remains a minor sport in Japan, and the matches will be held at a newly constructed venue that reportedly features tents for dressing rooms and washroom facilities located some distance away.
Unlike other sports at the Asian Games, which will utilize a mix of cruise ship cabins, temporary wooden container accommodations, and hotels, cricket teams are being offered hotel lodging. This decision comes as the organizers grapple with a surge in athlete participation, with the number of competitors reaching approximately 17,000, a significant increase from the 11,000 expected at the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics.
Miyaji noted that the cricket tournament is being coordinated by the Asian Games organizing committee in partnership with the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). He emphasized that discussions regarding accommodation options had been ongoing for a considerable time, aiming to ensure that cricket teams receive adequate facilities.
Reports from India indicate that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is dissatisfied with the current arrangements and may consider sending a second-string squad. Initially, the BCCI had named a 15-player team led by Shreyas Iyer, which also includes the promising 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
Despite the challenges of limited preparation time—only 17 months to get ready for the Games—Miyaji expressed confidence in the quality of the facilities being provided. He stated that efforts have been made to offer the best possible accommodations within the constraints imposed by the timeline and available resources.
Furthermore, the pitch for the cricket matches is being prepared by the curator of the renowned Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Sri Lanka, which is expected to meet high standards. Miyaji remarked that the playing surface and overall field conditions would be the best seen in cricket's history at the Asian Games, promising an exciting experience for players and fans alike.
