The Crimson Cliffs Mustangs delivered an impressive performance on Friday night, defeating the Brighton Bengals 36-13 in a high school football game held at Brighton High School in Cottonwood Heights. This victory marks a significant step forward for Crimson Cliffs as they continue to build momentum in the preseason.
From the outset, the Mustangs' offense demonstrated its versatility, effectively utilizing both ground and aerial attacks. The team’s defense also played a crucial role, managing to hold the Bengals scoreless in the second half, despite Brighton entering halftime with a surge of momentum.
Head coach Wayne Alofipo acknowledged the areas where his team needs improvement, particularly regarding penalties. With a roster filled with new starters—only one player returning from last season—Alofipo understands that growing pains are part of the process. “Our immaturity keeps showing up, and that’s part of growing up fast, right? We’re growing up physically, schematically, now we just got to get the discipline down,” he stated. “If we can get that down, we can really come together in a different way.”
The game began with a well-executed drive by Crimson Cliffs, culminating in a 15-yard rushing touchdown from Ryder Tebbs, followed by a successful extra point from Jacob Sparks. This initial 7-0 lead was quickly challenged as Brighton responded on their next possession, aided by several penalties against the Mustangs that allowed them to maintain possession. The Bengals tied the game early in the second quarter with a three-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Griffin Matsumori to Dax Matheson.
However, the Mustangs regained their composure, scoring again with a 16-yard run by Hu Alisa and a safety that brought the score to 16-7. Just before halftime, Brighton executed a well-timed hook and ladder play, allowing Easton Gustafson to score a touchdown, cutting the deficit to 16-13. Alofipo described the play as “unfortunate” for his team, highlighting the learning curve for his young defense.
As the second half unfolded, Crimson Cliffs' defense tightened its grip, allowing the offense to capitalize on multiple scoring opportunities. Quarterback Tanoai Andresen, the lone returning starter, connected with receiver Jack Boyer for two touchdowns, while Kammon Uluave added an impressive 85-yard interception return for a touchdown. The Mustangs scored 20 points in the second half, showcasing their offensive depth and versatility.
Alofipo praised his players' efforts, noting the strong performance from both the offensive line and the defense. “We have a great quarterback and a great offensive line that can block on the pass and the run,” he said. “Our defense is fast, so they get pressure on the quarterback and our defensive backs make a lot of pass breakups.”
Despite the victory, Alofipo is aware that the Mustangs will face a tougher challenge next week against the region favorite Hurricane. He emphasized the need to eliminate penalties to compete effectively against a well-coached and physically strong opponent. “That team is legit. People don’t realize how good Hurricane is,” Alofipo remarked. “They are fast, physical, well-coached. We’ve got to be ready for a battle.”
