After signing a five-year, $175 million megadeal with the Chicago Cubs over the winter, Alex Bregman's first season with the Cubs has largely been a disappointment. His offense has regressed significantly, and he entered play on Wednesday with the worst slugging percentage and OPS of his career.
He put those struggles behind him on Wednesday, however, erupting for the best game of his MLB career against the Washington Nationals.
Bregman exploded for three home runs and seven RBI, powering the Cubs to a 12-6 rout of the Nationals.
After walking in his first two plate appearances, the three-time All-Star went deep in his final three, putting the game out of reach. The three homers and seven RBI were both career highs for Bregman, who cleared the fences on Tuesday as well.
After a sluggish first half, Bregman has caught fire over the last few weeks. He's finally found his power stroke with nine long balls and 26 RBI over his last 26 games, looking more like the player Chicago thought it was getting. He's now up to 16 homers, 61 RBI and a .759 OPS.
The Cubs have lost only seven of those games, as Bregman's helped fuel their recent hot streak. They're hoping the two-time World Series champ can stay healthy over the next two months and have a similar impact in October.
