Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney has publicly stated that Lane Kiffin, the head coach of Ole Miss, had no involvement in the formal tampering accusations that Clemson lodged against the Rebels. This clarification comes amid a controversy surrounding linebacker Luke Ferrelli's transfer from Cal to Clemson and subsequent recruitment by Ole Miss.
In a recent excerpt from a book by author John Talty, it was suggested that Kiffin had provided Swinney with information that fueled the latter's allegations against Ole Miss. The book claims that Kiffin encouraged Swinney to take a stand against Ole Miss coach Pete Golding regarding the recruitment of Ferrelli, who had played the 2025 season at Cal before transferring.
After Ferrelli signed with Clemson, Swinney alleged that Golding reached out to the linebacker to inquire about his buyout, prompting the accusations of tampering. Swinney made these allegations public during a news conference in January, shortly after the NCAA had begun communications with Ole Miss regarding the situation.
During a teleconference on Wednesday night, Swinney reiterated that Kiffin was not involved in Clemson's decision to report Ole Miss for tampering. He acknowledged that Kiffin had reached out to him after Ferrelli's commitment switch but emphasized that Kiffin had “zero” influence on the tampering report submitted to the NCAA.
“Here’s what I would say about that, and be very clear on that, Lane Kiffin had nothing to do with, I mean zero to do with me turning in the tampering situation here at Clemson,” Swinney stated. He further added that he operates independently of hearsay and is committed to protecting his program from any form of tampering.
As the controversy unfolded, Kiffin had already been appointed head coach at LSU, having taken over the position after the 2025 regular season at Ole Miss. His transition to LSU was marked by attempts to remain with the Rebels for the College Football Playoff, which ultimately did not materialize, leading to Golding's promotion from defensive coordinator to head coach.
Talty's book, titled “Lane Being Lane: the Story of Lane Kiffin, College Football’s Agent of Chaos,” is set to be released later this month and will provide further insights into Kiffin's career and personal life during his tenure as Alabama's offensive coordinator under Nick Saban.
In the backdrop of these developments, Swinney has expressed concerns about the current state of college football, labeling it “embarrassing.” This sentiment comes as two players who had signed with NFL teams are now committed to LSU following a controversial court ruling in Louisiana that could affect player eligibility. The SEC is set to contest this ruling in a hearing scheduled for Thursday.
Clemson and LSU are poised to face each other in a highly anticipated matchup on Saturday, marking the second game of a home-and-home series. The previous encounter saw LSU narrowly defeat Clemson 17-10, setting the stage for an exciting rematch as both teams look to establish themselves early in the season.
