Former Northern Ireland international defender Tom Flanagan has become Colchester United's head of first team recruitment after injury forced his retirement as a player.

The 34-year-old, who joined the U's from Shrewsbury in July 2024, ruptured his Achilles tendon in training in March before announcing his retirement in July.

Flanagan will continue his rehabilitation alongside his new role at the League Two club, working under head coach Danny Cowley and assistant head coach Nicky Cowley.

"I'm excited to use my experience and understanding of the game to help support Dan and Nick, ensuring our recruitment is aligned with what they need and the direction we want to take the football club," he told the club website.
