In a significant development in the ongoing bankruptcy proceedings of Shilo Sanders, the son of Colorado football coach Deion Sanders, it has been confirmed that Deion Sanders will not be required to testify. This decision was made by the presiding judge, Michael Romero, after assessing the trial's progress since it commenced on August 31.
Deion Sanders had been instructed to be available for remote testimony on September 4, a day following his team’s season opener against Georgia Tech. However, the judge concluded that certain topics, which would have necessitated his testimony during the rebuttal phase, did not arise during the trial. As a result, the coach's appearance in court is no longer deemed necessary.
Shilo Sanders, who previously played for the Colorado Buffaloes, is currently facing a substantial financial burden, attempting to overcome approximately $12 million in debt. This debt stems from a lawsuit filed by John Darjean, a former security guard at his school in Dallas. The lawsuit alleges that Shilo assaulted Darjean, causing permanent injury during an incident at Focus Learning Academy in September 2015 when Shilo was just 15 years old.
In a prior ruling, Darjean secured an $11.89 million default judgment against Shilo Sanders after the latter failed to appear in court for the trial in 2022. The connection between Deion Sanders and the case is notable, as he was Darjean's supervisor at the academy, where Darjean served as the baseball coach. During the trial, Darjean testified that he had communicated with Deion Sanders on the day of the incident, receiving instructions to confiscate Shilo's phone.
According to Darjean’s testimony, when he attempted to take the phone, Shilo allegedly responded with physical aggression, delivering an elbow strike and punches. However, Shilo Sanders has denied these accusations, asserting that it was Darjean who initiated the confrontation. This claim contradicts the testimonies of other witnesses and the findings of the Texas state court from 2022.
Although Deion Sanders did not testify in person, he was represented through a pre-recorded video played during the trial. In this video, Sanders discussed how he advised Darjean to handle the situation with his son similarly to how he would address other disciplinary matters.
