The Colorado Buffaloes head coach did not just retire from football like another player. He left only after introducing the football world to an incredible mentality that never succumbs to mediocrity, a mindset he portrays even as a coach today. As he recalls an emotional, almost embarrassing childhood experience with his stepfather, Sanders’ invincible mentality was an instance of him turning his scars into stars.
Most interviews with Deion Sanders feature him discussing his tough upbringing in relation to his mother, Connie Knight. But every once in a while, he takes the attention away from her and talks about either his father or his stepfather. This time, his stepfather took the spotlight.
“Me and my stepfather was fishing one day,”. Sanders said on theUpsetthegram podcast. “We had no reeling rod, nothing like that. And we was down, you go off the side of this road, and you go down in this little creek, like the water ran like that, then it opened up to this big body of water that was connected to whatever body of water it was. And we were just sitting up there on buckets, cane pole fishing, blue gill… And I saw this boat at the end of where that opening was, and it looked like a father and son. But I couldn’t tell because we weren’t close. And I looked at my father, and I did not want him to be embarrassed of that moment that he saw down what I saw. We’re on buckets, but they’re on a boat. And I made up my mind right there.”
“You know what I said to myself? Most people would have thought I would have thought, ‘Man, I wish we had a boat like that. One day, I’m gonna get that boat for my stepfather, and we’re going to be straight.’ It’s not what I thought. My mind, even at that age, I said, ‘I want the lake.’ So, one day, I’m gonna buy property. I’m going to have lakes. And behind my home right now, I have a pond, it’s called Lake Willie Knight. That’s my stepfather’s name.”
After Mims Sanders, Deion’s biological father, fell into intense drug addiction that eventually led him to prison, his mother remarried Knight. Even though they were not wealthy, he played an important role in Sanders’ life, helping shape him into the success he is today.
On Father’s Day two months ago, Sanders dedicated a part of his post to giving a shoutout to his stepfather, while alsoconfessing that one of his ultimate regrets was not wishing either his father or his stepfather a happy Father’s Day or telling them ‘I love you’.
“Stepfathers, just because you stepped in and you ain’t the biological father, that doesn’t mean you ain’t the father, because I had one of the best that ever lived; Willie J. Knight, I love you.
While he is unable to wish him well and express his love, Sanders has done several things to ensure his memories do not fade. And one of them was how he transformed a mere fishing adventure into a monument that lives on today.
