Hang around a football huddle long enough and you will hear coaches lean back on a favorite phrase or team motto.
Some are universal. "We tell ourselves, 'Today is the day,'" Laurel's Christian Brown said.
Others are school specific. "Anchor down or anchor away," said Carter Marlowe of the Delaware Military Academy Seahawks. "It just means play resilient and do what you do."
At Delaware Online High School Sports Media Days on Aug. 11-12 at Woodbridge High and Abessinio Stadium, football players from across the state were asked to divulge their team's favorite sayings among many other rapid-fire video interview questions. Their responses have been compiled in a series of videos rolling out this week at Delaware Online.

There will also be interviews with field hockey and girls volleyball athletes statewide as well as head coaches in all three sports.
After winning the Class 1A title in 2025, Seaford has a new saying for 2026.
"We went from the hunter to the hunted," said Evans Janvier.
The words "Set the Standard" hang over the athletes in the St. Georges weight room. Hodgson repeats the saying, "My ball or no ball."
Football players were also asked to explain something about football they didn't understand when they first started playing, to share the best lessons they've learned from the sport and to perform an impression of their head coach. Their responses can be found in the videos below.
