This is a make-or-break season for Chicago Bears defensive tackle Gervon Dexter. He was supposed to take the sophomore leap in 2024 and looked like he would for the first five weeks, but then his production dropped off.
Dexter ended up being second on the Bears in sacks last season with six. His production was more consistent over the course of the season. However, he still has not become the prospect Chicago thought he would be back in 2023 when they drafted him No. 53 overall.
But maybe, this is finally the year Dexter breaks out and has that elite season Chicago believes he can have. Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen believes he has gotten better and more consistent so far in training camp.
"Number one, I think he’s gotten better. I see more consistency. I see more ability to come off and strike the line of scrimmage," Allen said. "Regardless of whether it’s contract year, no contract year, you want to see guys go out there and compete and perform at a high level consistently. That’s what we’re looking for."
Especially with edge rusher Montez Sweat still not back in practice and the injuries piling up in the secondary, it will be important for Dexter and the rest of the defensive line to get after the offense and get pressure on the quarterback. The first preseason game against the Cleveland Browns on Saturday should provide a good benchmark for what Chicago’s current situation on defense is.
