In a recent episode of his podcast ‘Actions Detrimental,’ NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin provided an optimistic assessment of the new racing package that debuted at Daytona. The changes, which include reduced horsepower and a smaller spoiler, were designed to enhance the racing experience by allowing drivers to be more aggressive during overtakes.
Hamlin, who played a significant role in advocating for the updated rules package, noted that the modifications resulted in lower drag, which contributed to a more dynamic race environment. During the Coke Zero Sugar 400, drivers were able to maneuver more freely, creating opportunities to make bold moves that were often difficult in previous configurations.
“I could tell right away that the car had less grip. Certainly. I believe that handling was more of a factor this time around than what we’ve had in years past. You saw those that wanted to make moves towards the front and be aggressive, they could,” Hamlin remarked, emphasizing the positive effect the new package had on race strategy.
He further added, “I think without a doubt it was better visually from my seat. I felt like if I wanted to make a push to the front, if I had the car handling, I could. I thought it was a step in the right direction and the fans need to know that this is all we could change in this amount of time.”
The Coke Zero Sugar 400 showcased the impact of the new package as distinct draft bubbles formed, allowing teams to build their own momentum. Notably, Team Penske’s Fords capitalized on this opportunity, while RFK Racing drivers Ryan Preece and Chris Buescher teamed up effectively during Stage 1 to create their own racing line.
Chase Elliott also demonstrated the potential of the new package by taking the lead after falling off the main draft. However, his race was hampered by a fuel strategy that placed him among the backmarkers during an overtime restart, ultimately impacting his finishing position.
Despite the overall excitement, not all drivers shared Hamlin's enthusiasm for the new Daytona package. Christopher Bell, Hamlin’s teammate at Joe Gibbs Racing, expressed disappointment with the changes, citing a lack of significant improvement in car performance. Bell, who finished outside the top 15, described his experience as perplexing, stating, “I was really disappointed because I really bought into it. I thought it was going to be a lot different and it didn’t weigh out different at all.”
As both drivers look ahead, Hamlin enters the upcoming Chase as the top-seeded competitor, holding a 25-point lead over second-place Ryan Blaney. Bell, on the other hand, is positioned sixth, trailing by 50 points. The Joe Gibbs Racing team now prepares for the first round of the revamped Chase format at Darlington Raceway, where they will have ten races to accumulate points and vie for the coveted Cup Series title.
