Deshaun Watson’s return to Cleveland has become about more than winning the starting quarterback job. The veteran is trying to regain his footing after a long injury absence while facing growing frustration from the Browns’ home crowd.
As the pressure builds, his wife has made it clear that Watson will not face it alone.
Deshaun Watson’s Wife Backs QB After Browns Fans Turn on HimJilly Anais answered the noise surrounding Watson with four simple words.
Following the Browns quarterback’s latest appearance, Anais posted game-day photos on Instagram that included clips of her watching the game and intimate moments with Watson. Her caption read, “Here for 4,” referring to her husband’s jersey number and making her support clear as criticism continued to follow him.
Anais did not stop with the Instagram post. She also shared it on her Instagram story, pointing back to the message with just four words, adding, “What my caption says.” The message came after Watson was booed by the Cleveland crowd during a 31-7 preseason loss to the Buffalo Bills at Huntington Bank Field.
Watson entered after halftime but struggled to pick up momentum, finishing 5-of-12 passing for 35 yards with an interception. The performance gave frustrated fans another reason to voice their displeasure, but Watson believes the reaction goes beyond what happened between the lines.
After the game, Watson described the boos as “disrespectful” and said he believes the response was personal.
“I didn’t have no reaction,” Watson said. “I think the whole world knows it has nothing to do about the performance. It’s a little bit [more] personal than that. I think that’s a disrespectful thing. I’m gonna keep whatever I feel with me and my family internally with how I feel about that and move on.”
Watson also brought up his previous experience at the same stadium. He suffered a torn Achilles the last time he played there, and he recalled the reaction from some fans after the injury. “Last time I played on this field, I tore my Achilles,” Watson said. “That same fan base cheered when I got hurt.”
For Watson, this history has made the relationship with Cleveland supporters much more complicated than a typical quarterback-fan dynamic.
The pressure on Watson also comes with the weight of his massive contract. He is entering the final season of his five-year, $230 million contract, which was fully guaranteed when he signed in 2022. The Browns restructured his 2026 salary, but moving on from him would still carry a huge financial cost.
Watson has recovered from consecutive right Achilles ruptures and is now competing with Shedeur Sanders for Cleveland’s starting quarterback job.
The Browns have yet to name their Week 1 starter, leaving Watson with another major hurdle before the regular season begins.
