Detroit Lions Make Roster Moves by Waiving Jabari Small and Seth McLaughlin

The Detroit Lions are actively adjusting their roster just days after finalizing their 53-player lineup. On September 2, the team announced the waiving of running back Jabari Small and center Seth McLaughlin, both of whom have been dealing with injuries.

Small and McLaughlin's injuries were significant enough to impact their availability during the Lions' preseason finale against the Indianapolis Colts. McLaughlin was placed in concussion protocol, preventing him from participating in that crucial game, while Small exited the contest due to his own injury concerns.

Initially, both players were included in the Lions' 53-man roster, a decision that reflects the team's strategy to maintain depth while navigating injury challenges. By waiving them now, the Lions avoided triggering injury settlements, which would have complicated their ability to re-sign either player to the practice squad immediately.

If they clear waivers, Small and McLaughlin could potentially rejoin the Lions' practice squad after 4 p.m. on September 3. This could be beneficial for Small, who was positioned to serve as the Lions' No. 4 running back, especially with Isaiah Pacheco currently on injured reserve due to a back injury.

McLaughlin's role as a backup center is also critical, particularly with Cade Mays on injured reserve. In the event of an injury to starter Juice Scruggs, Tate Ratledge is expected to step in, but McLaughlin's experience would have provided additional security for the offensive line.

These roster moves come at a pivotal time as the Lions prepare for the upcoming regular season. The team aims to solidify its lineup and ensure that they have the necessary depth to compete effectively, especially with the challenges posed by injuries. As the Lions look forward to the season, the management's decisions regarding player health and roster composition will be crucial in their pursuit of success.
