As the Detroit Lions approach their final preseason game and roster cuts, the team announced that it has placed EDGE Payton Turner on injured reserve, likely ending his 2026 season before it ever began.
The only pathway back to playing in 2026 would be if the Lions and Turner reach an injury settlement. Detroit signed Turner as part of its offseason moves to create competition among its edge rushers. But, a back injury throughout training camp prevented Turner from being a factor in the Motor City.
The 27-year-old has appeared in 31 career games, but he also never played last season with the Dallas Cowboys as a rib injury sidelined him throughout 2025. Originally a first-round draft pick by the New Orleans Saints in the 2021 NFL Draft, Turner has totaled 50 tackles, 11 quarterback hits, 11 tackles for loss, five sacks, four passes defended, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery in his career thus far.

Detroit closes its preseason slate with a 1 p.m. ET kickoff on Saturday at the Indianapolis Colts.
As the regular season approaches alongside final roster cuts, there certainly will be more news on the way with the Lions looking to reclaim their dominance over the NFC North.
