Detroit Pistons Full Regular Season Schedule Breakdown

After several days of build-up, the NBA has officially released its regular season schedule for the 2026-27 campaign, and there’s more than a few notable takeaways that pertain to the Detroit Pistons. 

Earlier in the week, it was announced that the Pistons would open the entire regular season on Oct. 20 with a 3 pm tip-off against the Boston Celtics, the first of three matchups scheduled for that day. After that, the league dropped the full NBA Cup schedule yesterday, which includes one nationally televised game for Detroit during Group Play against the Toronto Raptors, and also revealed that the Pistons will face the Cleveland Cavaliers at noon on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. 

But as for the regular season in its entirety, the Pistons have a complete 82-game gauntlet to fend with at the moment. Of course, Detroit opens the slate with an early game against the Eastern Conference’s No. 2 seed from last year in the Celtics, but not even one week will pass before the Pistons have their first instance of a game on back-to-back nights. In total, Detroit will have 14 back-to-backs on their schedule, so roughly two per month will be the norm for the upcoming season. 

In terms of that first week in particular, the Pistons will face the Celtics then hit the road to take on the Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers and New York Knicks for a gauntlet right off the bat. All four of those opponents are expected to be playoff squads this year, so Detroit will be tested from the very start once the regular season begins in earnest. 

With regards to national broadcast coverage, the Pistons will be featured in marquee matchups 19 times during the regular season, which ranks No. 13 in the NBA with a dozen teams appearing on national television more often. That’s not an insignificant amount, but it is still relatively low for a squad that was first place in the East for the majority of the 2025-26 campaign. 

Overall, the Pistons will have a manageable schedule that still presents some difficulty for the upcoming season, but they will not have the added expense of an international game on the docket this year after playing in Mexico City the year prior. Even though the NBA is prioritizing international marketing with the possibility of opening NBA Europe still on the table, Detroit will not have to endure the extra travel time required to pull off a game abroad. 

Apart from the Pistons’ season-opener against Boston and the MLK Jr. Day game against the Cavs, Detroit is scheduled to play in five weekend games with a tip-off time before 4 pm, so there will be some tip-off variability for the squad to deal with but nothing too out of the ordinary.
