As the 2026 college football season kicks off, Ball State University is set to face Ohio State at the iconic Ohio Stadium in Columbus. This matchup holds special significance for one player in particular: Dianté Griffin, a fifth-year defensive back for the Cardinals. Griffin's return to Ohio Stadium is not just a game; it marks a poignant homecoming for a player who has deep roots in Buckeye territory.
Griffin joined Ball State this offseason after spending four years as a walk-on at Ohio State, where he graduated in May. His transition to the Cardinals has been a remarkable journey, and returning to Ohio Stadium for the season opener against the Buckeyes adds a layer of nostalgia and excitement. "I’m very excited," Griffin expressed. "I’ve got a lot of family, a lot of friends going to the game. They’re from Ohio, they go to Ohio State, I am an alumni, so I’m very excited. It’s always good to go back to where you call home, and I’m from Ohio, so it’s home."
Griffin's connection to Ohio State runs deep, shaped by a family legacy that has made a significant impact on the Buckeyes' football history. His grandfather, Archie Griffin, is celebrated as the only two-time Heisman Trophy winner in college football. Additionally, his father, Andre Griffin, played running back for Ohio State, and his other grandfather, Dave Reynolds, also donned the Buckeye colors in the 1960s. With this lineage, Dianté became the seventh member of the Griffin family to wear the scarlet and gray, making his upcoming appearance against Ohio State even more meaningful.
On September 5, Griffin will achieve a milestone as he becomes the first Griffin to enter "The Shoe" and suit up against the Buckeyes, a moment he views as an exciting challenge. "I don’t think it feels weird. I look at it as fun," he stated. "That’s fun to me. You get to go in there; everybody’s always used to seeing Griffin in an Ohio State jersey. Now, they get to see me for a different team, and that’s just fun."
After limited playing time at Ohio State, where he primarily contributed on special teams, Griffin sought a new opportunity as a graduate senior and found it at Ball State. "I love it here, the people, my teammates, the coaches, they’re all amazing," Griffin said, expressing his gratitude for the support he has received. "I wouldn’t wish for nothing else from where I picked. I picked here for a reason. God led me here, and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else."
As he prepares for his return to Columbus, Griffin is eager to reconnect with former teammates, including fellow defensive backs Jaylen McClain, Leroy Roker III, Jermaine Mathews Jr., and his former roommate Brenten "Inky" Jones. Most importantly, he looks forward to seeing his family in the stands, even though they will be wearing the familiar Buckeye colors. "I grew up going to the games, obviously spent my college career there, so I’m always in Ohio State gear, always repping the Buckeyes," Griffin reflected. "This time, it’s going to be pretty cool going in there to try and beat them. I think it’s just a great opportunity, and I’m excited for what’s next."
