Although it was a preseason game and the New England Patriots would rest most of the team's starters, Browns quarterback Dillon Gabriel may have gone from an afterthought to being part of an ongoing QB controversy.
Against the Patriots in the first half, Gabriel would go 12 of 15 for 186 yards and 3 touchdowns. He looked poised in the pocket and would spread the ball around the field, hitting eight different Browns receivers in a lopsided victory by a score of 37-13 in Cleveland. Gabriel did fumble the ball once.
Gabriel has been an afterthought amid the QB controversy between Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson. He has been given limited opportunities and reps thus far. But he has failed to meet expectations after being drafted before Sanders in last year's NFL Draft.
Gabriel lost the job to Sanders last season after going 1-5 as a starter, and was the butt of jokes on draft position and whether or not the Browns would shop him this offseason.
The quarterback position in Cleveland is continuously shifting, and this season may be no different, but it is definitely worth keeping a close eye on to see how the team handles a full QB room. With Gabriel's performance against the Patriots, the Cleveland Browns still have plenty to think about.
