Do Bills have best running back unit in NFL entering 2026 season?

The Buffalo Bills have quite a dangerous offensive backfield, but is their rushing attack the best in the NFL today?

Pro Football Focus assessed the Bills as having the eighth-best running back unit in the NFL entering the 2026 NFL season.

“It'll be the James Cook show once again after accruing 348 carries for almost 1,800 yards last season,” the PFF team said. “Cook’s 734 yards before contact were over 200 more than the next-closest running back. This backfield is as close to a one-man operation as it gets in the NFL, and even Cook's fumbling issues aren’t enough to keep him off the field for a prolonged period. Ty Johnson and Ray Davis sit in reserve.”

Cook was sensational last season. The NFL’s rushing yards leader performing like the best pure ball-carrier in the NFL next season will come as no shocker. Ray Davis carries expectations to establish himself behind Cook in 2026. He recorded a career-high 442 rushing yards with the Bills as a rookie in 2024, which was not too long ago, and serves as an indicator of what he’s capable of producing in a backup role.

Davis, as well as Johnson will get the opportunity to assert themselves as reliable change-of-pace backs behind Cook next season. The Bills’ rushing attack is primed to be prolific once again in 2026, and will be a key component of their push for a Super Bowl victory.

Bills Wire will continue to provide updates throughout the 2026 NFL season.
