Dodgers Reverse Course on Jonathan Hernandez Days After Cutting Him

The Los Angeles Dodgers continue to shuffle the fringe of their bullpen, opting to re-sign Jonathan Hernandez to the team as an innings eater.

Hernandez was designated for assignment on Monday in a move that allowed for Charlie Barnes to be added to the roster.

Additionally, Seth Halvorsen was called up in favor of Kyle Hurt that same day, but since then, Halvorsen has been demoted to make room for Landon Knack.

Now, Knack is on the outside looking in, moving back down to Triple-A, with Hernandez taking his place.

Hernandez, as a result of his DFA, was put on outright waivers, and now that he was not picked up, the Dodgers selected him.

To make room on the 40-man roster, per the transaction tracker, Barnes was outrighted to waivers.

Barnes was sent down after Blake Snell was activated, and they are now sending him down again. He can reject it after his time on waivers and become a free agent, or accept it and stay in the Dodgers’ system.

Knack, despite making a silly blunder, was impressive on Wednesday, getting two strikeouts and allowing just two hits in a bulk relief role of 2.2 innings.

He had a successful minor league stint going as well, which should keep him within the organization long enough to make another impression and possibly get another shot.

What do the Dodgers get with Jonathan Hernandez?

Hernandez is a known quantity for the Dodgers, whom they signed in the middle of the season in May to eat innings, and he stayed with the team until the end of June.

His numbers in June were really bad, with a 11.57 ERA in eight games and 11.2 innings.

He got a second run at the start of August, allowing no runs and just one hit through 4.2 innings of work.

Given his recent success, a shot with another team was not out of the picture, but instead, he got no interest and will be back with the Dodgers, where he will hold down a spot for a short bit as Brock Stewart, Blake Treinen, and others get healthy or back on track.
