Dolphins trade QB Quinn Ewers to Jaguars for 2028 sixth round pick

Coming into training camp and the preseason, quarterback Quinn Ewers seemed like the clear backup to Malik Willis with the Miami Dolphins.  However, following Ewers’ poor performance in the preseason, Miami decided to trade Ewers to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a 2028 sixth-round pick.

Compensation update: Jaguars officially are sending a 2028 sixth-round pick to the Dolphins in exchange for QB Quinn Ewers.

As a seventh-round pick out of Texas last season, Ewers had the opportunity to start the final three games of the season for the Dolphins.  While he lost two of those games against the Cincinnati Bengals and New England Patriots, he managed to get his first win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  In that game, he had 172 passing yards and two touchdowns and seemed to prove he could be a quality backup in the NFL.

That belief fell apart for the Dolphins during the training camp and the preseason.  He only ended up playing one game in the preseason, in Miami’s opener against the Washington Commanders.  In that performance, he completed one pass in eight attempts and threw an interception; his quarterback rating was 1.6.

For Jacksonville, it is unclear whether Ewers will move into the backup role to Trevor Lawrence or the third string behind Nick Mullens.  Mullens was the clear No. 2 quarterback for the Jaguars before this trade.
