Limavady United 0 - 2 Dungannon Swifts FT
Dungannon Swifts maintained their impressive momentum in the Irish Premiership, achieving their fourth consecutive victory with a solid 2-0 win over Limavady United. This result not only highlights the Swifts' strong early season form but also places them at the top of the league table, at least temporarily, pending Coleraine's match against Crusaders later on Saturday.
The match saw Leo Alves open the scoring with a well-placed free-kick in the first half, followed by a close-range header from Junior that sealed the win after the break. Alves struck from the edge of the penalty area in the 30th minute, curling the ball past Limavady goalkeeper Marty Gallagher, who managed to get a hand to it but could not prevent the goal. Junior then doubled the lead in the 68th minute, capitalizing on a rebound after Gallagher parried an initial shot from Sean McAllister.
Limavady United, still searching for their first points of the season, showcased moments of promise but ultimately fell short. New signing Jamie McGonigle, who joined the club on loan from Coleraine just before the transfer deadline, had a couple of chances to score on his debut but was unable to find the back of the net. The Roesiders, newly promoted to the league, have struggled to find their footing, and this match continued their winless streak.
The game began with an energetic pace, as Limavady's Ronan Wilson had an early opportunity blocked for a corner. Dungannon responded quickly, with Shea Gordon firing a volley over the bar shortly after. Gallagher was forced into action early, denying Sean McAllister in the sixth minute, showcasing the visitors' attacking intent.
Gallagher's skills were tested again in the 17th minute when he saved a low drive from Alves, who was set up by Paul Doyle. Limavady had a golden opportunity in the 22nd minute when John Butcher set up McGonigle, but Declan Dunne's strong save kept the score level at that point. This save proved crucial as Dungannon took the lead just eight minutes later.
Despite Limavady's efforts to equalize, including a near miss from Kieran Farren that clipped the crossbar and a follow-up attempt from Alfie Gaston that was parried by Dunne, they were unable to convert their chances. Dungannon's Junior finally put the game beyond reach with his goal, ensuring that the Swifts left with all three points.
As the match drew to a close, both Andrew Mitchell and Corey Smith came close to extending Dungannon's lead, but the score remained 2-0. The Swifts will look to build on this victory as they continue their campaign in the Irish Premiership, while Limavady United must regroup and seek to secure their first points in the upcoming fixtures.
