Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles news and links …
Eagles’ Lane Johnson on Barkley: ‘We’ll see the Saquon from two years ago’ – NFL.com
Lane Johnson sees Sean Mannion’s offense getting Saquon Barkley back to his explosive ways. Speaking Wednesday from joint practice with the New England Patriots, the star right tackle gushed about how the wide run plays will fit Barkley’s ability. Johnson also noted that the Eagles will find more ways to get the RB the ball. “The more productive we are in the run game and stuff feeds off that, we’ll see the Saquon from two years ago,” Johnson said, via Zach Berman of The Athletic. “We’ll see the big plays, we’ll see him flex wide at wide receiver, we’ll see him in the screen game.”
Will Saquon Barkley become a receiving threat in 2026? It may finally happen – NBCSP
Seems like every summer we talk about how this is the year the Eagles are finally going to start throwing to the backs. And every year they don’t. The Eagles have never had a running back with 300 receiving yards in a season under Nick Sirianni. Their last 300-yard receiving back was Miles Sanders with 509 yards back in 2019, and along with the Rams they’re one of just two NFL teams without a 300-yard receiving back since 2021. But they’ve spent a lot of time working on the passing game with the backs this summer, and on Day 1 of joint practices with the Patriots outside Gillette Stadium, the Eagles spent a good chunk of the day working on the running game with Saquon Barkley and getting Barkley and the other backs involved in the passing game. “The more productive we are in the run game, stuff feeds off of that,” Lane Johnson said after practice. “We’ll see the big plays, we’ll see (Saquon) flex out at wide receiver, we’ll see him in the screen game. So we saw just a little bit of it today.” Barkley has quietly enjoyed a strong training camp as the Eagles transition to an outside zone running scheme that should help him get back to his Offensive Player of the Year form of 2024.
Eagles-Patriots Joint Training Camp Practice Notes: Day 1 – BGN
OVERALL PERFORMANCE: The Pats looked like the better team in the first of these two joint training camp practices. They started strong before the Eagles made up some ground … only for New England to pick it back up and finish on top. It wasn’t like the Birds got thoroughly dominated, though.
What’s the biggest worry for your team entering this season? – SB Nation
The NFC East Mixtape Feed is here! It’s a spot for fans of the Giants, Commanders, Cowboys and Eagles to gather and talk ball (and a little smack for good measure, as well). I have more info about this new Feed community in a formal intro, but, for now, let’s get the football discussion going! I asked each site manager from the four NFC East sites a question to kick off a series of roundtable discussions we’ll have on here…
Patriots training camp recap: Drake Maye shreds Eagles defense in first joint practice – Pats Pulpit
Dominant Drake: The Eagles’ top defense stood no chance against Drake Maye and the Patriots passing attack. Maye completed his first 13 passes across four periods including several downfield completions to A.J. Brown, Romeo Doubs, DeMario Douglas, and Kayshon Boutte. Maye then ended his day with 1:05 on the clock and the ball around the 20-yard line. After a first-down drop by Doubs, completions to Douglas and Mack Hollins got New England across midfield. A short pass to Hunter Henry then got the unit in field goal range which Andy Borregales knocked through from 52 yards out.
Eagles/Patriots Day 1 Reactions: AJ Brown Beats The Eagles – Go Birds! Podcast
Eliot Shorr-Parks is joined by Brandon Lee Gowton to recap everything that happened on Tuesday during the first day of the Eagles and Patriots joint practices. Later, Dave Uram stops by to tell us everything he saw from AJ Brown on an impressive day for the former Eagles receiver.
Eagles 2026 training camp notes, Day 13: Eagles-Patriots joint practices, Part I – PhillyVoice
That’s six of the Eagles’ top seven linemen with a clean sweep on their reps. The only loss was Landon Dickerson, to Milton Williams. (I originally thought Dickerson narrowly won that rep, but a few other Eagles beats with a better angle on that one vehemently disagreed, so I’ll concede.) I would have also given Willie Lampkin a 2-1 record on his three reps. The Eagles’ other backups in 1-on-1’s? Yuck. Myles Hinton in particular got torn up. I had him down for 0 wins, 4 losses, and some of the losses were bad.
Eagles-Pats Roundup Day 1 – Iggles Blitz
The Eagles focused on running the ball today and had a lot of success. Some of that was good blocking, some was Saquon Barkley doing Saquon things. He’s had a great summer. As for Hurts and the passing game, it was a mixed bag. They didn’t have DeVonta Smith in team drills, which didn’t help. The passing game is just erratic right now. The deep ball to Moore was great. But there were also off-target throws that should have been made. The coaches and players will study the tape to see what went right and what went wrong. Having good tape to study is invaluable when discussing problems and coming up with solutions. The offense struggled at the end of practice when in a 2-minute-drill. The Pats were able to score, the Eagles weren’t.
Bowen: A.J. Brown stuff is great fun, but Vic Fangio said something at Eagles-Pats joint practice that might actually matter – PHLY
In a month or so, I don’t think anyone will still care what A.J. Brown said or did during these joint training camp practices between the Eagles and the Patriots. I doubt anyone will still be referencing anything Jalen Hurts or Devonta Smith had to say about Brown, on an August day in Foxborough, Mass. Someone did say something Wednesday that might matter in a month, though. It was Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. He was asked about Jonathan Greenard, the former Vikings edge rusher the Eagles traded for this offseason, then signed to a $98 million contract extension. Greenard was the Eagles’ biggest offseason move, the reason many fans and observers felt good about an edge rush that wasn’t nearly as good in 2025 as it had been a year earlier. Greenard had shoulder surgery early in the offseason. Then, on the first day of training camp, the Eagles told us he had suffered a pec strain, and wouldn’t be ready to practice. General manager Howie Roseman told reporters he wasn’t worried. “When you have a guy like that who prepares the way he does, who has the experience in the NFL the way he does, you know he’s going to be ready to play when we start the season,” Roseman said. That was on July 29th. Wednesday was three weeks later, to the day. Here is what Fangio said in Foxboro: “I don’t know when Greenard will be back. That injury he got in our weight room is going to take some time to heal.”
Quinyon Mitchell-A.J. Brown battle highlights Eagles’ joint practice vs. Patriots – The Athletic
Let’s start with A.J. Brown because he was the biggest story. Eagles fans might not like hearing it, but Brown was outstanding in this practice. He caught seven passes in seven-on-seven drills and team drills in different spots on the field — coming back to the ball, in stride on crossers, over his shoulder. Brown faced Quinyon Mitchell and Riq Woolen. It seemed most of the plays came when he was on Woolen’s side. Brown was a force in this practice, as he often was in Eagles practices. The Eagles know as much. But if you were of the view that the Eagles traded a declining player to New England … it didn’t look like that Wednesday.
Biggest concern for every NFL team entering the 2026 season – PFF
Philadelphia Eagles: Replacing A.J. Brown. Trading A.J. Brown made long-term sense for the Eagles, netting them a first-round pick in the 2028 NFL Draft, but there’s no replacing a player of his caliber in the short term. Even in what was widely viewed as a down season, Brown still topped 1,000 receiving yards in 2025. His departure should lead to a larger target share for DeVonta Smith, but it also places greater expectations on newcomers Dontayvion Wicks and Makai Lemon.
2027 NFL quarterback predictions: 16 teams with questions – ESPN
Most likely outcome: This team still seems too good to flop completely, even with all the changes. The offensive line is healthy and still one of the best in the league on paper. Running back Saquon Barkley is still there, as is receiver DeVonta Smith. There might be some growing pains early on as everyone gets used to Mannion and his system (and while Mannion gets comfortable in his new role), but Hurts is too tough and too driven to crumble under all of this. The most probable outcome is that he bounces back, the Eagles’ offense has a strong enough year to complement a great defense and the team enters the postseason as one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl. If that happens, we’ll be talking about another Hurts extension next spring. Long-shot outcome: It all falls apart. Mannion isn’t up to the task, Hurts doesn’t take to the new offense, and the O-line feels the effects of the departure of longtime Eagles OL coach Jeff Stoutland. Tanner McKee gets some starts late in the season. The Eagles miss the playoffs despite their excellent defense. They change offensive coordinators again and decide to move on from Hurts via trade, the way they did with Wentz in 2021.
Young Eagles player got treated like a ‘piñata doll’—but his coach won’t give up on him – NJ.com
“I think Kelee is— he’s been everybody’s piñata doll for a while,” Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said before Wednesday’s joint practice against the Patriots. “I kind of sense he could be coming. We’ll see.”
Spadaro: Quinyon Mitchell lets his play on the field do the talking – PhiladelphiaEagles.com
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Quinyon Mitchell understands the benefits of joint practices against the New England Patriots. He welcomes the challenge of going against standout wide receivers like A.J. Brown and appreciates the fact that there is another day of work ahead and many facets of his game to clean up before the regular season opens against Washington on September 13 at Lincoln Financial Field. All business, for sure. If you expected a lot of trash-talking and chirping from Mitchell during these practices, think again. Mitchell said, in fact, “We didn’t talk at all, actually. We didn’t talk until after practice.”
Former Philadelphia Eagle joins Camden Catholic coaching staff – Burlington County Times
The Camden Catholic High School football team has added a former All-Pro to its coaching staff. James Bradberry, who played eight years as a cornerback in the National Football League and earned a Super Bowl ring with the Philadelphia Eagles, has joined the Irish as an assistant coach for this season. Bradberry is working with the team’s defensive backs and wide receivers. According to Camden Catholic head coach John Martino, Bradberry was the one who reached out to the program about coaching.
Browns tight end now eligible to return to college football, been away from training camp – Dawgs By Nature
Like it or not, amateur sports no longer exist in the way all of us knew them for most/all of our lifetimes. Arguing over right, wrong, or whatever is mostly pointless as things spiral toward “all that matters is money.” At this point, nothing is that surprising. We’ve seen basketball players who were drafted, signed, and played games for multiple professional teams, then returned to college. The NFL hasn’t had the same amount of court-related things go down, but that could change with a ruling on Wednesday that involves Cleveland Browns TE Dae’Quan Wright. [BLG Note: Former Eagles tight end seems to be be going back to playing college football.]
The Falcons have placed RB Trey Sermon on IR – The Falcoholic
Sermon, a guy I have been unabashedly rooting for as an Ohio State homer, has landed on IR. He was a late addition, signing with Atlanta just nine days ago, and played only six snaps in last week’s preseason debacle. [BLG Note: Former Eagles running back’s season is already over.]
3 losers from Cowboys fight-filled scrimmage against Saints – Blogging The Boys
EDGE Donovan Ezeiruaku. It really was not all that long ago that nearly the entire hopes of the Cowboys generating a pass rush in 2026 seemingly rested on the shoulders of second-year draft pick Donovan Ezeiruaku, who had a promising rookie campaign despite being in horrible circumstances for the defense as a whole in 2025. Good on the Cowboys for adding Rashan Gary since this time, Malachi Lawrence in the draft, and then earlier this week Von Miller as well, but the reason we now have to feel much better about these veteran additions instead of continuing to hype up Ezeiruaku still feels yucky. For the second time this training camp, Ezeiruaku was told to hit the showers early for fighting, this time throwing a punch at a Saints player.
Commanders injury news: Johnny Newton reportedly has surgery on torn pec – Hogs Haven
Commanders defensive lineman Johnny Newton had surgery on a torn pectoral muscle in New York on Wednesday, according to The Athletic’s Nicki Jhabvala. He is expected to be out a significant stretch, meaning months of the 2026 regular season at least.
How bright is the NY Giants’ future? ESPN isn’t very optimistic – Big Blue View
New York Giants fans are filled with optimism, feeling the future is brighter after more than a decade of struggle. The team has an accomplished head coach in John Harbaugh. There is a quarterback in place in Jaxson Dart who looks like he could be the answer at the position for the next decade. So, Giants fans have plenty to be optimistic about. Right? ESPN analysts are not so sure. In its ‘Future Power Rankings’ covering the 2027-2029 seasons, ESPN ranks the Giants No. 22 in the 32-team NFL.
