Leeds United make a swift return to the City Ground to face Nottingham Forest in Tuesday’s EFL Cup Second Round tie.
The encounter in the East Midlands comes just three days after the Premier League curtain raiser at the very same venue which saw the Whites snatch a late victory!
With the deadlock yet to be broken as the game ticked towards the 90th minute, Anton Stach won a free kick on the edge of the hosts’ penalty area.
In typical Stach fashion, the midfielder stepped up and whipped a fantastic effort beyond the despairing dive of Matz Sels and into the far corner, sending the travelling contingent behind the goal into raptures.
From there, the defence – which included debuts for club record signing James Trafford between the sticks and for commanding centre-half Tarik Muharemović – stood firm to hold on to the clean sheet and earn a first three points of the new campaign!
With Harry Wilson also earning a maiden start for his new club, Tuesday’s EFL Cup tie may give fans a chance to see our fourth arrival of the summer, Nico Elvedi, in action.
The vastly experienced centre-half made the Elland Road switch from Borussia Mönchengladbach, where he had tallied up over 300 appearances in the Bundesliga across an 11-year spell.
The Whites have history in the competition having lifted the trophy in 1968. In front of nearly 100,000 at Wembley, Terry Cooper’s first-half goal sealed a 1-0 victory over Arsenal in the final, in the season before Don Revie’s legendary side won the league title for the very first time.
Should the tie be level at full-time, it will go straight to penalties. Action from the City Ground gets underway at 8pm.
