EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The El Paso Locomotive FC beat the Oakland Roots SC 1-0 on Saturday night, Aug. 8, recording yet another clean sheet at home and securing a third consecutive home victory.
The Locomotive put pressure on Oakland from the opening minutes and capitalized in the ninth minute. Rubio Rubín connected with the end of a cross from Jimmy Farkarlun, slotting the ball inside the far post and past Oakland’s goalkeeper to give El Paso the early lead.
El Paso continued to create scoring chances in the second half, including an Alex Méndez free kick that forced Oakland’s goalkeeper to tip the ball over the crossbar, but couldn’t find a second goal. The Locomotive defense held strong when put under pressure by Oakland’s attack, securing the victory and another three points at home.
Abraham Romero recorded a third straight clean sheet at home with Saturday’s 1-0 win. He made three saves en route to the shutout, the most by a Locomotive goalkeeper since the 1-0 loss to Monterey Bay FC on June 20.
Saturday’s win marks a third straight home win for Locomotive. This marks the first time that El Paso has won three consecutive games at home since the 2023 season. During this stretch, Locomotive beat Orange County SC 1-0, Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC 2-0, and Loudoun United FC 1-0.
With the lone goal in Saturday’s match, Rubio Rubín now has 10 goals in the USL Championship this season and is currently tied for third in the golden boot race.
Attendance at Southwest University Park was 4,723.
The Locomotive will head on the road next Saturday, Aug.15, to face San Antonio FC. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. MT.
