The Buffalo Bills enter the 2026 NFL season with significant pressure on head coach Joe Brady and quarterback Josh Allen. ESPN’s Dan Graziano believes last season’s divisional-round exit raised the standard in Buffalo.
Speaking on ESPN’s Get Up, Graziano explained why the Bills cannot treat another playoff appearance as enough.
“The coach that was there for nine years and took them to the playoffs eight times in nine years after 17 years when they didn’t go at all before he got there, went to the second round last year, lost in overtime and got fired,” Graziano said.
He then said, “Now, if you’re not under pressure to follow that, I don’t know who is.”

Sean McDermott’s departure sent a clear message about Buffalo’s expectations. The organization now wants Brady to take the team further than McDermott managed during his tenure.
Graziano believes that decision has created immediate pressure on the new head coach.
“The Buffalo Bills organization has said to the locker room, to anybody who’s listening, second round of the playoffs is not good enough anymore,” Graziano said.
Buffalo finished 12-5 last season before losing 33-30 to the Denver Broncos in overtime. Allen played well individually, but another early playoff exit left the organization searching for a different approach.

His promotion also gives Buffalo continuity, but the change in responsibility creates a different challenge.
“We need to elevate,” Graziano said. “And they’re saying that Joe Brady is the guy that can elevate them beyond where Sean McDermott did.”
Buffalo also reshaped its roster during the offseason. The Bills added wide receiver D.J. Moore and pass rusher Bradley Chubb while making significant changes to their defensive structure.
Those moves reflect a team trying to maximize Allen’s prime rather than simply remain competitive. The Bills have reached the playoffs regularly, but the next step remains the only one that matters.

Graziano called the decision to move from McDermott to Brady “a big risk.” That risk becomes clearer once the regular season reaches its decisive stages.
Allen recently described Buffalo’s locker room as unusually connected. He said players are mixing across position groups and enjoying their time together. “At the end of the day, we just wanna have fun. We wanna play this game, we wanna have fun, we wanna do it well,” he said.
That atmosphere can help during a long season, but it will not reduce the expectations. Graziano made that distinction clear.
“As much fun as Josh wants to have, and I’m sure they’re having fun in camp, when it comes time to December and January, they’re under a lot of pressure to perform,” Graziano said.
For Brady and Allen, another playoff appearance will not be enough. Buffalo now needs to turn regular-season success into a deeper January run.
