The Portland Trail Blazers are once again being treated like a team that should feel fortunate just to reach the Western Conference Play-In Tournament.
ESPN recently projected Portland to finish seventh in the Western Conference with 43 victories. That would represent only a one-win improvement over the Blazers’ 42-40 record last season.
That prediction is far too conservative.
Portland did not simply bring back the same roster and hope for another small step forward. General manager Joe Cronin added Ja Morant without surrendering a single draft pick, while Damian Lillard is preparing to return from the torn Achilles that kept him out last season.
The Trail Blazers can win more than 50 games if their most important players remain healthy.
Morant is the biggest reason that possibility should be taken seriously. He only appeared in 20 games last season, but still averaged 19.5 points and 8.1 assists while dealing with an unstable situation in Memphis.
Portland now gives him a fresh opportunity surrounded by young players who already experienced meaningful basketball last season. A healthy and focused Morant remains an MVP-caliber talent who can transform close losses into victories.
The Blazers should also expect continued improvement from Donovan Clingan. The 22-year-old averaged 12.1 points, 11.6 rebounds and 1.7 blocks last season while starting all 77 games he played.
Clingan gives Portland a reliable interior presence behind its aggressive guards. If his outside shot continues developing, he will create even more driving space for Morant, Shaedon Sharpe and Deni Avdija.
Then there is Lillard, whose value should not be measured only through scoring. Portland needs his shooting, leadership and experience during the moments when a talented young roster begins losing control.
Of course, winning 50 games will require Micah Nori to organize a crowded rotation. Morant, Lillard, Jrue Holiday and Scoot Henderson cannot all play as if they are the only point guard on the floor.
However, that depth should become an advantage if every player accepts his responsibility. Portland has scoring, defense, rebounding, athleticism and veteran leadership throughout the roster.
ESPN’s projection is understandable if it assumes injuries, chemistry problems and a slow transition under a first-year coach. It becomes disrespectful when it ignores how high this roster’s ceiling could become if those pieces connect.
The Trail Blazers are not guaranteed to win 50 games. Still, predicting only 43 victories feels like evaluating their floor and presenting it as their most likely outcome.
Portland has enough talent to avoid the Play-In entirely. If Morant returns to form and the roster stays healthy, ESPN’s prediction could look outdated before the season reaches its halfway point.
