The Minnesota Vikings opened training camp with a quarterback battle between third-year arm J.J.McCarthy and veteran Kyler Murray. However, it was a short-lived battle, with the Vikings announcing on Monday that Murray had won the job before a single preseason game had been played.
“J.J. McCarthy missed his entire rookie season due to injury and started just ten games last year, with Minnesota winning six of them. Now the still only 23-year-old will be forced to be a backup,” ESPN’s senior NFL insider Adam Schefter reported on X.
Despite the disappointing news, McCarthy has a shockingly rare response to the franchise going in another direction, especially in today’s day and age.
“This is the place I want to be.”“Obviously, every competitor wants to play,” McCarthy said, via ESPN. “But moving forward, it’s just about continuing to work hard and just staying ready for when my number’s called.”
Although many in his position would request a trade, the former National Champion quarterback for the Michigan Wolverines is glad to be in Minnesota.
“This is the place I want to be,” McCarthy said. “And I love every single person in this building. I love the state. I love the fanbase. And I’m going to continue to just do whatever I can for this team and this organization.”
It’s great to see McCarthy’s mature response to such adversity. His career hasn’t gone the way he imagined when teh Vikings selected him with the 10th overall pick, but his book is far from closed.
As long as he stays prepared, he’ll have another opportunity to show what he has, whether it’s with the Vikings or elsewhere.
