European cricket has spent the better part of a decade chasing a franchise league of its own, and the wait finally ends this month. The European T20 Premier League launches its inaugural season on August 26, backed by three national boards and sanctioned by the ICC.

The competition is jointly organised by Cricket Ireland, Cricket Scotland and the Royal Dutch Cricket Association and represents the second attempt at this concept. Before this, there was the Euro T20 Slam that was scheduled for 2019, with Eoin Morgan, Dale Steyn and Shahid Afridi already signed, only to collapse a fortnight before the opening match when its promoters ran into financial difficulty.

This version has been rebuilt from the ground up. Co-founded by Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan alongside Saurav Banerjee, Priyanka Kaul and former Delhi Capitals chief executive Dhiraj Malhotra, the ETPL was itself pushed back a year from its original 2025 launch because of investment delays.

When and where is the European T20 Premier League 2026?

The inaugural ETPL season runs from August 26 to September 20, spanning 32 matches across two venues in two countries.

The opening phase is staged at Voorburg Cricket Club, also known as Sportpark Westvliet, in The Hague, where the first 17 matches are played over 12 days. The action then shifts to Malahide Cricket Club in Dublin, which stages the remaining league fixtures along with the Qualifier on September 19 and the Final on September 20.

The tournament opens with Rotterdam Dockers taking on Amsterdam Flames at Voorburg on August 26, followed a day later by Dublin Guardians against Belfast Wolves.

Six city-based franchises make up the competition, drawn from Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands. The ownership groups read like a roll call of the modern game, with several former internationals holding stakes.

European T20 Premier League 2026 format

The ETPL uses a double round-robin structure, with each franchise facing every other team twice for a total of 10 league matches per side.

The playoff route is deliberately streamlined. The team finishing top of the table qualifies directly for the final, while the sides placed second and third meet in the qualifier for the remaining spot in the title decider. There is no eliminator or second qualifier.

Squads were assembled through a combination of marquee international signings and a dedicated draft for local players from Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands, ensuring each franchise carries a European core alongside its overseas stars.

European T20 Premier League 2026 players to watch

The marquee names give the league genuine star power for a first season. Steve Smith and Tim David headline Amsterdam Flames, giving them a top order capable of chasing almost any total, while Ravichandran Ashwin captains Dravid's Dublin Guardians.

Faf du Plessis leads Rotterdam Dockers alongside Anrich Nortje and Donovan Ferreira, and one of the more unusual storylines belongs to Belfast Wolves, where Glenn Maxwell will play under his own ownership as both captain and proprietor.

Heinrich Klaasen, Mitchell Marsh, Trent Boult, David Miller, Liam Livingstone and Finn Allen add further international quality. Crucially for the organisers, the league also provides a platform for Europe's own talent, with Paul Stirling, Scott Edwards, Josh Little, George Dockrell, Bas de Leede, Aryan Dutt and Ireland's emerging Jai Moondra all involved.
