Ex-FSU football QB Tommy Castellanos gets fifth year of eligibility

Former Florida State football quarterback Tommy Castellanos has been granted a temporary injunction by a Kentucky judge that gives him a fifth season of collegiate eligibility, according to court documents.

It, at least for now, ends a long legal process for Castellanos, who's been fighting for a fifth year of eligibility since the conclusion of the 2025 season with the Seminoles. Following the injunction issued by Jefferson Circuit Court Judge Brian Edwards on Aug. 21, Castellanos intends to enter the transfer portal, according to On3.

A return to FSU is unlikely, especially given the Seminoles start the season in Week 0 against New Mexico State on Aug. 29, eight days from the publishing of this article, and are set at quarterback. Castellanos threw for 2,760 yards and 15 touchdowns with nine interceptions while adding 557 rushing yards and nine touchdowns in his lone season with FSU.

Castellanos played four seasons as a quarterback at the collegiate level, but a return to college might see the fifth-year player take on a new role at wide receiver. He received NFL minicamp invites as a wide receiver, and one season of development at the position in college could boost his chances of receiving similar interest next NFL preseason.

Wherever he lands, he will have a short time to adjust, with Week 1 beginning the first week of September for college programs.
