Former LSU football quarterback Max Johnson was officially named the starting QB at his new school. Johnson will take the reins for the Georgia Southern Eagles this fall.
Johnson, now in his seventh year of college football, began his career at LSU in 2020. We've seen plenty of CFB players stick around a few years in the modern era, but Johnson is an extreme case. His career has been a whirlwind—he was at LSU when Ed Orgeron was fired, at Texas A&M when Jimbo Fisher was fired, and at North Carolina when Mack Brown was fired.
Johnson showed promise with LSU in 2020, posting a 78.5 PFF offensive grade. Johnson's 2021 season with the Tigers was fine, too, as he tossed 27 touchdowns and only six interceptions. But when LSU hired Brian Kelly, Johnson entered the transfer portal.
Johnson started a handful of games at Texas A&M, but didn't build on the momentum he had at LSU. In 2023, Johnson threw for 1,452 yards and nine touchdowns.
Johnson didn't play much with North Carolina after an injury ended his 2024 season in Week 1 and he served in a backup role for most of 2025.
Now, Johnson gets one last chance to be a starter. Expectations are high for Johnson in Statesboro. He's way more experienced, and probably more talented, than your typical Sun Belt QB. The Eagles have put up some big offensive numbers during Clay Helton's tenure.
